Do you need a car? I know taking the bus sucks, but it does save a lot of money, esp if you get a bus pass.
If you're really keen on getting a beater, there are a lot of older American cars out there for under $1k. Like a Dodge Aries or something like that.

Only reason i need a beater is cus most of the good jobs require you to travel as a field tech and others are just like a 2-3 hour bus ride..
