I'm an IT manager, and I'm constantly asked the same thing. Keep everything strictly professional, and tell them you charge for your time. My house visits are worth $75 an hour plus 40¢ a mile round-trip.

That'll keep away the ones looking for a freebie. Those who are serious about it will pay your fee, and if it's for an initial setup of a new computer, you'll own their business, because they'll ask you every time they have a problem and you can charge them again.

I have the same problem...

Just because I work on A computer, not work on computers at my job, people in my family and friends automatically associate me with being able to fix a computer.

I am a programmer, I am supposed to know nothing about hardware....

Although I dabble here and there. :rick:

I never charge family or friends (alcohol), other than that, I charge $50 an hour and I require all parts to be ordered through me :chuckles:
