of course i'm a networking novice so I could be missing something.

you could set it on the router depending on the brand....Dont really need a proxy if he knows what to filter out.
Actually what does he want to filter out? If thats the case...Get a box and use SurfControl...

He'd either have to setup his network to send all the traffic through his computer first, which I believe is a proxy server, before going through the router and out onto the internet (useful to use that machine as a firewall and probably how your company has their systems setup to monitor what you view at work) or install some sort of network sniffer program to just watch what gets transfered over the network and record it. I've never used a sniffer so I don't know what kind of detail it can pull or have any recommendations but that would probably be the easiest method.

In reality though, if your going to go through the trouble, you might as well just get on his laptop when he's not home and go through the history. I don't really think it's going to matter to the boy how the dad obtained the information if he confronts him about something. I think the best solution is to sit the kid down if your coworkers concerned about something and talk to the kid about it. I don't know how old he is, but explain to him what he might stumble into on the internet and to use his judgement. The whole time your talking to him the kid will probably be thinking "Dad, I've downloaded a video of a woman blowing a horse and I'm going to grow up to be just fine, relax".

so the real question is what does the father really have (in terms of hardware) and can he do what he wants with the hardware he has.

if he wants to monitor what the kid is doing, then he doesn't have the hardware/software to do it.

Yeah, he's going to have to replace the router with either a better router, or a proxy server.

Thanks a lot
Hold the phone a second. Who's paying for this service, and whose house is it?

"Violate his privacy????" Is he the kid's father or isn't he? If he's a parent, he needs to put his foot down. If he doesn't want certain things coming into his house, he has that right. He should enable IE's Content Advisor (which is a biatch to roll back) and set it only for sites he approves of. If his son doesn't like it, too freakin' bad. "If I pay the freight, you dance to my tune."

I have no use for parents who refuse to be parents.

I'd tell him that filtering is useless and pointless.

Everyone should be allowed to look at whatever they want. Censorship just makes people stupid.

Besides, if the kid really wants the info/pics, they'll get em. I should know, I did.
