gun law
If you shoot them in the leg or "in the junk," there is still a good possibility that they could bleed to death. Running away to call the cops would be considered "fleeing the scene of a crime" if you go too far.
If you have to shoot someone, go center-of-mass, right in the middle of the chest. If someone is running at you with a bat, you most likely won't be calm enough to hit him in the leg anyway.

you can always tell the people who are clueless about guns, and/or have never shot a gun when they say 'shoot them in the leg, shoo their tires out...' etc'
Shooting isn't like it is in the movies, much more difficult to hit a human size target when the SHTF, let alone a small moving target, usually in the dark.
I also think its funny that those who have NO CLUE are trying to answer the question about the laws
Like some of the more informed people have said(ie: the cops and those who carry) have said:
for most states:
If you, as a reasonable person, have a reasonable fear of grave bodily harm or death then would be theoretically justified in shooting to kill.
also, you don't shoot to wound, you shoot to stop the threat. In real life when shot, you don't fly back ten feet and die. Many times assailants don't know they have been shoot and will keep attacking, especially drugged up bad guys. You shoot to stop the threat, sometimes thats one shot COM ( center of mass, chest) other times it a lot more than that.

That is why shotguns > pistols in home protection.
h:
But yes...it is sad to see that in this state, you can be sued and probably go to prison for defending your life and your home with a gun.

I love how the "drugged up bad guy" example always gets brought up by the gun lovers. I'm just curious, have you ever met one of these drugged up bad guys? Was he really mean and scary too?
