Pepper Spray Completed *HOLY CRAP*
Friday I got the Pepper Spray via my Instructor over at the Police Academy.
Most Pepper Sprays contain 10% O.C (OLEORESIN CAPSICUM) but the entire can really only contains about 0.19% Capsaicin (CAP-SAY-I-SIN). The Capsaicin is what actually causes the hot burning feeling.
1 drop of Capsaicin in 500,000 drops (roughly 6 gallons) of water is enough to taste; and if you tasted it, it would cause your tongue to burn severely for several minutes until it wore off.
1 drop of Capsaicin is roughly 0.001%.
The stuff we got sprayed with was 1.49% Capsaicin and 10% Oleoresin Capsicum. It was only diluted in roughly 1 ounce of water and 1/2 of an ounce of Alcohol (propellent). So needless to say, this was not your average Pepper Spray.
I got hit with it, dead in the eyes and all over my face, mouth, and nose. It slows your breathing down so you can only breath in about 10% of your normal capacity, nearly instantly caused my eyes to lock shut and then the intense burning begins.
I took the spray, then immediatly forced my eyelids open with my fingers so I could go aprehend and handcuff the "suspect", then over to the water I went which is really only used to wash excess off and initiate cooling. (It's supposedly equiviliant to the feeling of a 160F ambient temperuture on your face/eyes). After you do that, you have to just stand in front of a fan or wind and hold your eyes open to dry them out. Water only makes it worse.
3 hours after it happened my face was still completely red, eyes were red, and if I touched my face with water it reinitiated the entire thing over again. It's been 24 hours now and my eyes are fine, but my face still feels like I have the most insane sunburn imaginable; and I was standing under hot water. You know that feeling? Sunburn + Hot water = Ouch.
Short to the point, this 1.49% stuff (Vector) is *INSANE*.
But, it's done now...
