look what i am drinking.
It became very popular in the 19th century, but was eventually banned in most countries beginning in 1908. The reason is the presence of the toxic oil 'thujone' in wormwood, which was one of the main ingredients of Absinthe. Absinthe seemed to cause brain lesions, convulsions, hallucinations and severe mental problems. Thujone was thought to be the culprit, along with the fact that Absinthe was manufactured with an alcohol content of 68% or 132 proof.
h: I conceed. Continue on with your drink. :bows out:
Absinthe is sold in the states. Its made w/out worm wood. You can make it yourself though. Wormwood sold alone is not illegal either.
Basically, wormwood soaked in a sealed absinth bottle for however long, will create a sort of absinthe you'd get in other countries.
I had czech absinth once. A couple that was friends with my ex smuggled it back. It was yummmmm
Tastes a little like szambucka(sp?) or black licorice
