Default DIY question: installing access door in garage...

So, me and my bro tried to install a new access door on our mom's garage, it's too tight of a fit. The opening is about 1/4" too small width-wise [the height of the opening is ok]. How would you guys go about making the opening wider? We were thinking about using a thinner door stud on the knob side of the door. We could plane either the door, or the studs in the opening, but there's nails everywhere and stuff.

What do you guys think??

Edit - There are two of them. They'll need at least a 24.

yep. i didnt want you guys to think i'm talking about an overhead door

well, anyways, i came home from school, ready to tackle this job, but my mom told me that she hired some people to do it. they werent even professionals, they were self-proclaimed carpenters. they did a sloppy job of it too:squint:. Didnt even caulk it. If she wanted it done cheap by a semi-professional, she could have had it done by some Mexicans. They do a good job. I was gonna do it for free...:dunno:
