Default Asthma Sufferers..

Do any of you take Advair or Singulair for preventitive medicines? If so do you think they work? I've had so many problems lately with my asthma where I wake up atleast once a night with an attack that I'm looking into getting put on that. Any info you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Do you use a spacer?

I've heard that can be the biggest problem with your meds not working.

No I don't use a spacer. I was doing good as far as not having any bad attacks for a while..but just recently in the past 8 months or so I've been having massive problems. I've been to the hospital once within the 8 month period of time because I had an attack and wouldn't go to the hospital...I waited for about 2 hours of trying to breathe before I passed out and my mom had to take me. :happysad:

About three years back.. I woke up in the dead of night.. gasping for breath. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest.. and the amount of air I could get in... was like if I had been breathing through a coffee straw. I seriously thought I was going to be rushed to the hospital that night. I called my girlfriend at the time cause maybe talking to someone would calm me down. (she was never any help. "You're going to die!") I stumble out of bed.. and wake up my mom... telling her I think I needed to go to the hospital... but... somehow mom's have a way of fixing things. So.. the main attack was over... and was now just dealing with labored breathing. I went to the docs the next day... gave me some meds and inhalers.. and a breathing test...
Got a few attacks over the next week or so.. but.. the meds and inhalers helped. And.. soon... I was good to go.. with out a problem.

Weird.

The only other case of asthma I ever had was after I would run meets in cross country in high school.. but... I never did anything for that... because it was really just coughing fits. I think my doc was lying to me.

As for Advair, my mom is on it... so is my gf's sister... supposadly the side effects are weight gain.. but I haven't seen it in either party... but.. my mom complains about her teeth hurting

I don't want to gain weight. :awais: I've had asthma my whole life..when I was a lil girly I was in the hospital around every major holiday in those mist tents...the excitement of the holidays would cause me to have an attack. I couldn't ever run the mile and stuff in school because I would start having really bad attacks...if I laugh too much now a days I'll start wheezing really bad. h: I'll have really bad attacks and the next day my back will be hurting so bad because of how deep of breaths I was trying to take to get air and still I wouldn't get any air. Asthma sucks..I wish it would just go away..there are times when I really hate my life when having the attacks. I've tried so many types of meds that's why i was curious how this advair and Singulair stuff work. I go to the doctors in a few hours..so we'll see what he says.

I use my inhaler... I ended up in ER over a dozen times and most of the time I don't remember because I passed out. Last time was almost 5 years back, had to stay in the hospital for a week. Its been controlled a lot right now, I used to take Singulair but that didn't help. Just the inhaler 3 times a day does me good. Asthma has a lot to do with lifestyle and I found out the more I stress or eat the wrong kind of food my asthma gets worse.
