Mercedes supercar crashes on eve of launch November 19 2003 at 01:51AM By Nadine Christians Of all the cars in Cape Town to be involved in a collision with, the driver of a little Golf on Tuesday encountered nothing less than the new R4 million McLaren Mercedes Benz SLR. Eight SLRs have been brought to Cape Town from Germany for the official press launch at the Cape Grace hotel at the V&A Waterfront on Wednesday. About 140 motor journalists from around the world have been test driving the car on the streets of the city. DaimlerChrysler's group media manager Deon Ebersohn said that the driver of the SLR and eyewitnesses had reported that the Golf carrying four passengers had "sped through a red light" and hit the left-hand drive car on the front right-hand side. 'It is made of carbon fibre which is hard to damage' While the Golf's owner may rue his bad luck, he may get off lightly after all. Although his Golf was badly damaged and had to be towed away, damage to the SLR was minimal. "We are still assessing the damage to the car. It is made of carbon fibre which is hard to damage," said Ebersohn. Traffic official Heathcliff Thomas said an investigation was under way. He said no one had been injured. |
