A jury has found George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch coordinator who claimed self-defense in the fatal shooting of Miami Gardens teen Trayvon Martin, not guilty.

State prosecutors had charged Zimmerman with second-degree murder, though the jury also had the option of convicting him of manslaughter.

The six-member jury, all women, returned the verdict at . Seminole Circuit Judge Debra Nelson sent the jury to deliberate at about 2:30 p.m. Friday.

The verdict came after a five-week trial that caught worldwide attention, casting scrutiny on U.S. race relations and Florida’s self-defense law.

This story will be updated as details become available.

Despite the states best effort to make this trial one sided it really just affirmed his innocence.

I havent really followed the case due to the media's ability to pull all sorts of focus away from the evidence - what evidence was provided on either side?

I can't really say much. I haven't followed the trial either. h: It wouldn't surprise me if there were issues with evidence (or chain of custody of same)... anything to poke a hole in the prosecution's claims.

BTW, the link I posted earlier is broken already. The Herald goes into a lot more depth here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/07/1...guilty-in.html

The verdict came out as i suspected "Not Guilty"
At the end of the day both sides were wrong, but Zimmerman was within his right to defend himself!

Trayvon could have easily just kept walking home and told his dad.George could have easily stayed in his car and let the police handle it.
Know one will ever know what words were exchange to cause Trayvon to start whooping George's ass that nite. What we do know is trayvon was pummeling George to a point were George thought his life was threatened.

Agreed completely.

It surprises me that in a case like this, Florida has a statute requiring the DA to file for murder 2 as the top count, not voluntary manslaughter. IMO, that played the biggest role in Zimmerman's acquittal.
They couldn't meet the standard of acting with a depraved mind. And certainly not after the re-enactment of Martin's assault by the defense; that was very persuasive.
