Your thoughts on my thoughts on my current old car potential
I return to the US from Afghanistan in ~2 months equipped with a wicked farmers' tan and mucho dinero. Now that I have an internet connection (and obnoxious amounts of free time), I have been looking at all things car related. Currently rocking an '08 Yamaha R6S and an '05 TSX. I bought the TSX to complement the bike after ~6 months of not owning a car and rocking the bike 24/7. At the time I was more interested in practicality and comfort, but over the last 3 years, the TSX's dire lack of go-fast has slowly begun to wear on me. I have built a short list of 'maybe' cars, and to be honest nothing has me excited. Due to frequent moves, I really don't want to have more than one car.
Mostly impractical:
Used S2000 (~$12-15K)
Used Cayman S (~$20-30K) (Maintenance)
Used NSX :loco: (~$20-30K) (Upkeep - Tires, etc.)
BRZ/FR-S (~$26K+) (Nearly as slow as the TSX)
More practical:
Various BMWs (Maintenance)
Speed6 (Brother has one h: )
RX-8 (MPG, oil consumption, not really all that fast)
370Z? (Probably not more practical)
???
Here's the thing: I can probably get $10-12K for the TSX. It looks to me like anything worth switching to would be double or more the value of the TSX. I'm thinking that $5K spent on go-fast on the TSX matches or beats many used or new options that are $25K+. (Yeah, yeah, FWD/RWD/AWD, yeah.) Am I ignoring a potential car and/or just plain nuts? :hsughr:
Last-minute thought: Oh yeah, and I can put a hitch on the TSX and tow my bike, something that 90% of the cars I listed can't do. :loco:

From the list the only car I have owned is a Cayman S. Fantastic car...fast, fun to drive, really comfortable. Only down sides are that it only seats 2 people and maintenance is expensive. I paid over $1000 for the 1500 mile checkup With that said I think the car is quite affordable used. You can get a newer one with low miles in the $30k range. If you can live with these few drawbacks I would get the Cayman S.

S197 Shelby GT500 or a new 5.0 GT premium.
The BRZ is nicely balanced, but it's a momentum car. For street use, I think you will find it down on power. Reading about the IMS bearing failures on the Boxster and Cayman is enough to make me steer clear of both. 370z is decent, if you can live with lack of trunk space. It's getting very hard out here to find an non-riced S2k and at $30K, any NSX you find will have a lot of miles on it.
