Payroll is a null issue...any team could spend 150 mil if they wanted to. The Yankees somehow turn a profit. It's the owners that are too selfish to spend that much money on their team and instead spend 50 or 80 and hope to get lucky. Money doesn't buy talent, talent buys money. Look at the Mets...they've had one of the biggest payrolls recently and they are terrible. Remember when the Orioles had the biggest payroll? They sucked too. You spend too much on the wrong players, you lose. The Yankees have perfected how to spend a lot of money smartly.
true there is no question about that, you can attribute that to their management. the red sox have done same, theo epstein seems to have spent the money pretty wisely also. he seems to have acquired many people that steinbrenner wanted. but if you have an extra 50 million to work with and your a winning team it's much easier to get people to play for you. contreras was offered $32M, the sox offered $28M, it's tough to compete with that. also look at texas, they wasted all their money on one man and look where that got them. the yanks turning a profit also has to do with the fact their market and stadium is huge. the red sox turn a profit too, but since they can't sell more than 34,000 seats it limits what they can pull in. th orioles have a small fan base, hell when the red sox play them there is probably more sox fans than orioles fans their. i'm sure it's the same for the yanks when they play their too.
