depends.....
I've always gone with Alpine because I love the face of it. If your friend is deciding to put a system in, it depends on what he's looking for out of the headunit.

I went with stock variations (MY00 to MY03 headunit) but i've seen a lot of Alpines mesh well. With the adapter the controls above the start button work too.

I never had a bad experiance with my Alpine. Plus, the iPod controls are the most intuitive out all the ones I've used.

Does he want a CD Player?? The New Alpine iDA-X001 doesn't have a CD player, but the iPod controls are killer. Plus, 24 bit D/A Converter.

if you are happy with the sound of your stock radio you can look for a ipod interface for the stock unit , try logjam electronics .

the factory head unit is atrocious h: basically useless with the top down at highway speeds.

I'm waiting for mine to break before I replace it with an aftermarket unit...

But as some people have stated, modifry does have harness to retain dash controls for a variety of brands
