Default 600W amp, 500W sub help please

went over to schedule my window tint and i got into a conversation about my sub/amp plan.
The shop told me I shouldnt hook up a 600W ed nine to an alpine type r that handles 500RMS. They said it would be wasting the amps power, and wearing the sub out unnecessarily.
Is this true? What sub do you recommend (12") to go with the ednine?
Please dont tell me to get a 500$ Idmax, although nice id like to get away with a more affordable sub.
what do you recommend.

Wearing the sub out? WTF? Sure you will "waste" some of the amps capabilities because they are pretty underrated, but you wont be damaging the sub if you know how to tune in the amp.

I am assuming that you have the nine.2x which does 600 x 1 @ 4Ohm. An IDMAX would be nice. Ive always wanted that sub. But the eD 13ov.2 will also match up nicely for $200.

The shop should stick to window tinting. The type r will not get wore out.

just remeber that distortion will kill a speaker faster than anything else, so if you are pushing the limit of your amp you are at a greater risk of blowing out a speaker.

the shop, i guess their actually a chain, B&D motorsports or something, has a good name around here. I didnt really trust the guy who actually butted into my conversation with the worker im most familiar with and advised me to not buy that combination. the audio guy actually wasnt there, so when i get the tints next thursday ill see if hes in.
MOre importantly,
I can find the type r for like 140 shipped (if i get the lower ohm version, tha matches up with that sub)...but would the eD sub be better? Thinking about it, it wouldnt be wasting any of the amps capabilities.
Do you think the eD 13ov2 is a good sub? is the alpine better?

Might be a little biased, but here is eD's forum. Search about the OV subs. I think youll like it.
