Default What are some symptoms of worn Axles

... a reverse question! Usually I give the symptoms and ask for the cause.

Have had this 1997 Integra for all of the 116k miles on it. Around 60k, the road noise in the cabin got loud and has been getting significantly louder. Though it was the tires --- changed them with no difference. Had a front wheel bearing with a ton of play - changed it - still loud.

I'm thinking the CV joints are worn but have no real experience with FWD cars. The car sounds a little bit like a truck with mud tires and kinda pulsates with speed. I recently changed the manual transmission fluid too - no change. Definately not the brakes either. I'm hoping it isn't a bearing in the transmission but this does not sound like a nad bearing.

The noise is very hard to explain- best I can do is mild version of a truck with mud tires. CV boots are intact.

Any ideas?
thanks,
Brian

Yeah, sounds like CV Joint...is it like a "Wah Wah" roaring-type noise...kind of deep in tone?

Bad wheel bearings...
Outer joints will make a noticable clicking sound when cornering.
Inner joints will usually create a nasty harmonic vibration in the
car at about 40 mph in third gear....

chopped (cupped/scalloped) up tires will make the sound you describe as well as wheel bearings

Did you check the rear bearings as well?

Damaged tires will most definitely sound like that, but you said you replaced them.

RF wheel bearing is new and the others have no noticible play. I should have a dial indicator soon so I can be sure. The new tires didn't change the sound at all. My brother had a probe with a torn outer boot and a trashed CV joint and that thing clicked - this Integra doesn't click like that. No noticible increase in noise while cornering.

Is there any scientific way to measure axle and CV joint wear? With U - joints I simpy wiggle the shaft.

Wah Wah" roaring-type noise...kind of deep in tone
^^This is a good description^^

Thanks,
Brian

Just because a wheel bearing has 'no noticible play' doesn't mean it isn't bad....

Doesn't a worn CV joint makes a ticking noise?
