L'Natural
Team L'Natural's drag racing Civic.

By Gary Castillo

During almost a year on the sidelines undergoing re-constructive surgery in a bid to propel the Honda to unimaginable quarter-miles, Team L'Natural watched their "world's quickest" crown fall into the hands of a long-time rival.

The Skunk2 Racing Integra had been on the heels of the CRX all along and with L'Natural sidelined the e.t.s kept on dropping event after event.

Finally, in December of 1999 it was Skunk2's time to steal the limelight when Tony Shagday piloted the Integra to a record-breaking 10.94-second quarter-mile becoming the first-ever all-motor Honda to complete a 10-second pass.
However, the record sat untouched for a full season, not even the Skunk2 team could taste 10-second territory again.

Then in October of 2000 Team L'Natural shipped the CRX out to Atco, N.J. for the Jackson Racing Battle of the Imports. The record books came crashing down once again when, during shakedown runs, driver Shawn Hillier blasted down the quarter-mile ripping apart the dusty record books with a 10.73-second pass at 129 mph.

To silence any doubters once and for all, Team L'Natural not only went on to win the event, but became the first-ever all-motor Honda to post 10-second e.t.s in every round of competition.

Not only had Lookofsky reclaimed his crown, he had once again done so in the flamboyant Lookofsky style that we've become accustomed to.

As many already know, Import Tuner follows the all-motor army with a keen and appreciative eye as much of the technology utilized in this particular field trickles directly down to your daily-driven rides.

Rather than provide you with a laundry list of parts and pieces we decided to sit down and talk to Lookofsky, Hillier and Crew Chief Jeff Tirado to bring you a one on one with the crazy minds behind Team L'Natural.

2NR: Jeremy, what we want to know first of all is when, where and how did all this crazy shit begin?

L'Natural: (Immediately Jeremy, Jeff and Shawn start laughing) Well, in '92 I was in a crew called Untouchables from the San Fernando Valley. (Jeremy is somewhat reluctant to admit that he was into lowriders, but we squeezed the truth out.) Alright, Alright. My first ride was a Suzuki Samurai on switches, but it was dope though. Teal green paint, deep dish KMCs, I even had a mural on the hood.

2NR: Wow! Jeremy Lookofsky was a lowrider!

L'Natural: Yeah! (They're still laughing.)

2NR: How did you go from cruisin' to racing? Was your next car a Honda?

L'Natural: No, my next ride was even better. I had the dopest Ford Escort. It was decked out with three-spoke Anteras and a phantom top, it was the shit. But that was when I got into racing. I started racing my Escort at the street races and it snowballed from there. Pretty soon, I decided to buy a Honda.

2NR: Alright, so the Honda thing began when?

L'Natural: Well, in 1994 I bought a Honda Civic hatchback and started racing every week in Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley (for those of you who don't already know, Sylmar is considered the birthplace of front-drive import drag street racing).

2NR: Was the Civic sportin' gold flakes and wire wheels or what?

L'Natural: Hell no! By then it was going fast and had become an addiction. I had all sorts of go-fast parts from a local tuner, but unfortunately someone stole it the following year.

2NR: Then what did you do?

L'Natural: It was around the same time that I met Jeff and Shawn. I was still hanging out at the street races as Shawn was working plenty of cars with his B18C-powered Civic. In fact, he schooled a friend of mine who owned a CRX so bad that the guy decided to pull the motor out and sell the rest of the car so that he could build something new. That same CRX is the one dubbed L'Natural, see I bought the car off him and decided to build it.

2NR: Ironic.

L'Natural: Yeah! I stuffed a built Integra LS motor to begin with, had some fun with it at the street races and used it as my everyday driver.

2NR: But these days, the car is powered by a Prelude VTEC motor, isn't it?

L'Natural: Yeah! Well back then B-series transplants started to pop up everywhere and I decided that I wanted something different. I thought about the 2.2-liter VTEC Prelude motor, but everyone told me it wouldn't fit. That made me more determined to do it (typical Lookofsky style), so I contacted Charles Madrid at Atomic Performance (Atomic's shop motto is "we'll make it fit"). Charlie thought he could do it and in 1996 we became the first-ever to do a Prelude engine swap in a CRX.

2NR: Do you thrive on being the first to accomplish many things?

L'Natural: (laughs) Yeah! By the time we actually got the swap figured out and working right, the sport had evolved some and we decided to make the car a race-only project. We installed an Accel DFI engine management system to give us tuning capabilities and also swapped the factory-spec head for a JG Pro Series version.

2NR: How fast did you go with that set-up?

L'Natural: With that set-up, we got the car to run a best of 11.86. Then we built the entire motor and finally got the car to run in the 11.50s.

2NR: You were the first all-motor Honda in the 12s, first in the 11s and then you pulled the car off the track for quite some time?

L'Natural: In '99 we decided to take some time out to develop a new set-up and make some chassis adjustments. With the help of Ground Control, Darren at R&D Dyno and Lance Fuller we made a lot of changes to the car.

2NR: While you were developing the set up it left the all-motor field wide open giving several people a shot at taking you down.

L'Natural: Yeah! We watched the Skunk2 team progress and then of course they became the first to run in the 10s at that one Pomona event, but we were like, "it's cool." It's just more incentive to come back out bigger and better. You know how I am, I just got more and more determined to take back the title.

2NR: Well you certainly did that, Lookofsky-style, huh?

L'Natural: You know how it is! We bought the car back out during mid-season in 2000 and busted out 11.0s at our first event. Two races later, we were back at the top with a 10.73 at more than 129 mph.

2NR: Who do you guys consider your real competition?

L'Natural: Of course Skunk2, but we also give much props to Roger Sangco and the AEBS CRX.

2NR: What is it that keeps you so enthusiastic and who, if anyone do you guys look up to?

L'Natural: No one! This shit is simply an ADDICTION! No wait up, the Kubos. Gary and Lisa are the bomb. Gary knows more about this game than anyone.

2NR: So what's next?

L'Natural: Basically, stay on top. We got a lot of things to fine tune, the car is forever evolving.

2NR: Alright, finally, what advice would you give to a young and inexperienced Lookofsky wannabe?

L'Natural: (Really long pause) There's always light at the end of the tunnel! But for real, if anyone has any questions or needs some help they can e-mail us at Teamlnatural@aol.com.
