Default Need Help Painting Dash

Hey Guys, I need some help. I'm painting the dash in my car and I needed to know how to prep it and what kind of paint to use. I'm painting it white. I did a search and no luck. So if anyone can, give me some tips and advice on what to do. Thanks....

You should sand it down with some 400 grit sandpaper and then use a tack cloth to pick up every little debris. Don't know if you need to primer but you could probably paint it straight after sanding. I think that SEM's paint is best in terms of painting the interior.

On another note, have you considered just rewrapping the entire dash in white? Much better and you won't have to worry about the paint fading over time.

this is the best way of doing things:
clean it with a degreaser to get rid of all armor all and such...

then sand the dash so it is no longer shiny (this will take awhile - be patient)

clean it again - thoroughly, so there is no dirt or grime left on dashboard

you are taking the dashboard completely apart, right? you're going to need to repeat the process on vents, etc, too.

you will need to prime the dashboard and vents for best results...

then paint...

its a long process, but if you take your time and do it well, it will turn out really nice... just be prepared for the glare with the white! it's killer!

:werd: it's illegal in most states to paint it white. anyways, good luck. I'd suggest rewrapping it vinyl tho.

The glare that you get from the sun. Try leaving a sheet of paper on your dash, driving at noon. If that bothers you, imagine if your entire dash was white. You'd have this irritating white glare on your windshield and it "obstructs" your view of the road.

i had no idea it was actually illegal... do you know what states? i don't think it is here, but i've never checked...

the glare is bad. i recommend investing in some good sunglasses! and is also not fun to keep clean -- obviously.

i'd definitely consider some things before going white. but if it is what you want, be aware before you do it. =)

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm gonna find out what it costs to wrap in vinyl. Anyone have an idea what it costs? I just dropped my car off to get my interior done today. I'll ask them tomorrow.

I have no idea as to how much it costs to get it done profesionally, but I know you can do it yourself pretty easily. Search the web, you'll find how to instructions... I mean, you planned on painting the dash, you can surely wrap it:thumbup:
