Launch and Shift techniques for best times
My friend just picked up a RSX type S and we are heading to the track in couple of weeks.
He is having a little difficulty getting a good launch.
He will usually spin for a while in 1st before he hooks up.
I would like to get some advice to give him so when the RSX goes to the track it will be able to represent well.

Practice, practice, practice. I don't like to say I think there is a certain launch RPM. For every car and hence every driver there are different successful launch points. Before heading to the track play around with it, try launching at different RPM's and try to determine which one you feel was best. Believe me when you find that one, you'll know it, and feel it.:thumbup:

Stock RSX-S engine has a rev limit at launch, 5500rpm. now because the stock tires suck so much , the best launch rpm is around 4000 rpm. (with a lil slip of clutch) good luck!

If the car is not broken in properly and he's whailing on the car now, there's no guarantee that the engine's gonna last like it should. For the first 1000 miles of my Prelude, I didn't hit VTEC, didn't go faster than 70, shifted at under 2500, and varied the car's speed when possible. Gotta do that.
Best launches are at Cape Canaveral........j/k Usually around 3200-3500 RPM on stock tires. Had ours for 14 months already and 22000+ miles.

When the Cellica GTS came out 3 years ago with the 170 hp VVT-i and six speed, Toyota had almost 50 warranty claims in the first year with bent valves from over-reving. They found out that since the tranny is so tight it is very easy for someone who isn't familiar with the car to peg the tach and destroy the engine. They took care of the problems for those vehicles under warranty, and now, when you look at a new Celica, what do you see on the dash board? A red tag warning you to GET USED TO THIS CAR BEFORE YOU TRY TO DRIVE IT HARD! It has explicit, detailed instructions for break in procedures and duration. They also warn that damage to engine/transmission will not be covered if they determine that you didn't follow the instructions and heed all warnings. Also, if the salesman has a hunch you aren't used to driving stick period, he won't let you finnish the test drive.
