Default RSX vs. Type S

I realize that these 2 cars are seperated by 40 HP. 200 in the Type S and 160 in the Base model, respectively. My question is, what makes the Type S have 40 more HP from the factory? What have they done to the engine? If I got a base model, what could I do to get the extra 40 HP to make is perform like the Type S? Is there really that much of a difference between these 2 cars? I will be using it as a daily driver.

The base model doesn't have true VTEC as Honda would like you to believe.

In the K20A3 (base), it has full usage of VTC (that's the i in i-VTEC) but only one cam lobe. The ECU is tuned to disable 4 valves below 2200RPM and uses full 16 valves above 2201RPM.

What they call VTEC in that car is switching over from 12 to 16 valves.

In the K20A2 (02-04 S) K20Z1 (05-06 S) and K20Z3 (06 Civic Si) engines, they run in 16v mode all the time and when a certain RPM threshhold is exceeded (in my case, I have the Z1 so I crossover at 5800RPM) my engine switches cam lobes to a much more agressive setting. That's how I make power all the way to ~7600RPM

The Type-S is significantally faster, I believe at least a second or two faster.

Of course, in the twisties the Type-S shines due to it's lower stance (05+ feature) and thicker sway bars (any Type-S)

7600 not bad, i make power all the way to 8843..
Sounds like your due for a k-pro i raced a 05 rsx-s with i/h/e and k-pro and i will admit i was tired and he did give me a run for my money.. but he ended up losing by about 2 cars..from a dig..the k-pro FROM WHAT I HEAR.. makes the car run night/ day difference allowing revs to 8600k rpms and making power all the way to around 8k..
Not tryin to be cocky just stating you have a very bad ass car and with the right ecu you can seriously rip some people up..

I did a custom tune on my car recently what i consider my final tune and it runs great.. its really hard to believe but with this crower head running stock itr cam gears with ctr cams.. i'm making power up that high and reving DAILY to 9200k.. this car that i've sweated and bleeded on finally is where i want it to be..why am i reambling on i dunno sorry but nice rsx.

7600 is a guess. Most stock 05 dynos I've seen the power crapping out about then and completetly falling off around 8300.

Of course, my redline is 8100 and fuel cuts off at 8400. I try not to take it that high in gear though. Although it's kinda fun in 4th or 5th because the tach is moving slow so you can appericiate it more

Thanks man. There's more pictures at www.kenton.org/rsx

if i am not mistaken the type s also has a bigger exhaust, more aggresive cams, bigger intake and more compression too. the differences are night and day.

there is a huge dif between the 2. if you have the choice and performance is high on your priorities get the S. i took my 05 type s to the 1/8 mile track and had the opportunity to run a base 5 speed with tons of bolt ons and still beat him by 4/10s of a second. i also drove a base auto while my car was serviced and it was nice but it lacked the power and didnt handle as good
