Q's about Supercharging

Hi, I have a few questions about supercharing. I am thinking about purchasing the JacksonRacing supercharger for my 98 Prelude, but I was hoping I could get some quick information from you guys before I make any harsh decisions which cost a lot hehe. The supercharger costs anywhere from $2,500 to $3,000 depending on where its purchased, or so I've heard. I wanted to know, does anyone out there who has a JRSC know if is it manditory to rebuild the internals of the engine in order to provide good power and not blow up your engine? I've read reviews on www.carreviews.com under the performance parts and most people have said that they are running their cars with no moded internals and have no problems. I just want to make sure. Another question, which gauges would be the best to purchase and mount on the interior of the car? I know a Boost gauge is a necessity, but others have recommended oil gauges, temp gauges, etc. Another question is, do superchargers need blow off valves or intercoolers? I have heard that some do need intercoolers, but others claim they are not needed, Just want to clear that up also hehe. Finally, my last question does not really relate to the JRSC, but does anyone know if Oil Cooler systems are any good? Jacksonracing also has one of these and I was wondering how efficient they are at cooling the oil and making the car run cooler/easier. thank you for reading my post, hope to hear from anyone with insight into these topics. Again, Thanks! -Matt

alright..i'll do my best :)

1.) It's not MANDITORY to rebuild your internals. It's recommended because you can rev longer (or in boost longer) thus geting more power from your SC. Any type of forced induction puts more wear/tear on your internals. It's not MANDITORY, just RECOMMENDED. I wouldn't really worry about it now. I'd just look into it later.

2.) The only guage you'd really NEED would be the boost guage. It's always good to know how many lbs. your pushing. Then you can see if something is wrong (if you aren't pushing what your supposed to). Although the other guages would be somewhat helpful, they aren't really needed. The temp. guage is what i'd recommend after the boost.

3.) No SC don't need intercoolers or have blowoff valves (to my knowledge) I'm sure you could rig a intercooler to one with some modification, but it's not needed. Maybe with another brand of SC?? My friends JRSC was watercooled. I don't know if they all are, and I'm sure someone will elaborate on this.

4.) JR oil cooler: This is a pretty nice kit. I'd recommend it. My friend that has a JRSC has JR everything (he wanted to get sponsored) and he said it worked rather well. Especially under race conditions.

Hope that helps. I brushed on most topics, but that will get you started. Let me know if you have any more questions/comments.

Yeah, like he said, you don't need an intercooler or a blow off valve. Some have complained that the engine bay will get kinda hot, or the supercharger itself will, but as long as you have a competent fan (ie. even OEM, and it works), you have nothing to worry about. The boost guage, the oil cooler, all that is second to the JR MAP sensor. It'll run you about $150 (cheapest I've seen, you might find it for less), which I would recommend you buy WITH the JRSC. You posted because you were worried about internals getting damaged, well, you only need to worry about it if detonation occurs, and that might at lower RPMS if you run the OEM MAP sensor. So, buy the JRSC, and get the MAP sensor along with it. I envy you ... if only one was made for my 94 H23A.

BTW, say good buy to geting a v-tec controller. JR map sensor will conflict with it (and viseversa)

hondata is better anyways :)

Thanks for the Info. I went to the JRSC site and looked up the MAP sensor, but it says they are only available for the CRX and all Civics. Are the Civics Compatable with Preludes? or do I need to contact Jacksonracing to get info on one for a lude? Also, will the censor map completely block out my vtec? or will it just change the rpm engaugement like the Vtec controller does? Again, thanks for the replys, it will definatly help when I go shopping =]

No, no, won't block your VTEC, but that's about all I know. Ask JR, they usually respond reasonably quickly to tech questions, and ask them about applications too.

so it is a plus to upgrade to better internals

and some peoplles run on just the JRSC huh

well what are the MAIN internals you will need to replace to be on the safe side and i guess the less significent internals...

that might go along with the MAIN ones

or the other ones

like pistons rods, headers, exhaust, cam gears, wires, of course u guys know about this junk but what else would be good to upgrade

thanks i was wondering that myself also thanks

boost gauge isnt really necessary.. but its always good to know how many lbs your peaking at... the next step gauge would be air/fuel ratio... with more air.. your gonna have to make sure you have more fuel to richen the mixture... more air/less gas equals BOOM.. detonation isnt fun.. the very important gauge to consider is EGT Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge... like on my truck you shouldnt be over 1500.. thats too hot.. thats another sign of running lean... the motor needs more fuel to cool it down... blow off valves will work on a s/c.. but it has to be centrifugal... not roots type... not necessary anyway... if its roots type there is a valve that knows when boost is present or not... when boost is present.. the valve is open.. but when u letoff the gas.. the valve closes so air does not go backwards... an intercooler also really cant be used on a roots type because they are pretty much bolted on and replace your intake manifold.. it would be major hard/waste of money/time to try and stick a intercooler between the s/c and the top of the motor... my s/c would also raise and i'd need to modify the hood as well... ever consider a turbo? u can get more boost that way..

btw all the facts i use are based on my engine and most likely differ from yours

The essential's are to get lower compression pistons (preferably forged) and forged rods... if you were really running high pounds of boost, you would maybe look into crank modifications and sleeving your block.

if your going to only run the stock psi pulley that the kit comes with you shouldn't have to upgrade internals if you tune the car right.

B&M racing makes a oil cooler kit which is a little cheaper than the JR one

EGT gauge IMO is a must for monitoring how your engine is running when under boost

what kind of power are you looking for???
