G.O.P. Aides Knew in Late '05 of E-Mail
WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 — Top House Republicans knew for months about e-mail traffic between Representative Mark Foley and a former teenage page, but kept the matter secret and allowed Mr. Foley to remain head of a Congressional caucus on children’s issues, Republican lawmakers said Saturday.

They knew, and they kept it a secret...yet we are expected to trust them...too bad for the GOP — and it's only days before the election polls.

First, I strongly support a criminal investigation into Rep. Foley. If the accusations are true, and they certainly seem to be, then he is one sick individual that should be prosecuted under state and federal law.
As for the Republican leadership it appears that they did not know the content of the emails, told him to stop, and he assured them he did. I would have assumed the case was closed at that point. Emailing a page should not be an issue.
Bob Beckel, a Democratic strategist that I respect, was on Hanity and Colmes tonight and said that because Foley was gay that should have set off alarm bells. Using that logic any hetero lawmaker should not be emailing pages of the opposite sex then. I think that is a little off.
I do not think that the Republican leadership did anything wrong but this will be used as a campaign issue by the Democrats. It is easy to be a Monday Morning Quarterback when your hindsight is always 20/20.

Key House Republicans learned of the e-mails in 2005 and chose to deal with Foley privately, warning him to cease contact with the 16-year-old former House page.
They knew the risks...if your neighbor was stalking your 12 year old boy and he told you he will stop, do you still let him go on as if nothing happened?
A large group of GOP law makers sure did.
