Another Chevy Performance Truck
Not to be confused with the soon to be released Silverado SS, this article was taken from the December 02' Hot Rod magazine...
Chevy's $23,000 Super Truck PPat Henyon (Chevrolet Manager Special Vehicles) seems to have solved a dilemma with an exciting yet inexpensive alternative to the Ford and Dodge muscletrucks. Using the ubiquitous parts bin, he managed this regular cab 1500 Silverado, dubbed the SS, a 3.73:1-geared rear-wheel driver with the Trailblazer's five-link rear suspension, Camaro double overdrive six speed with a Steeda shifter, and a thumpin 6.0l engine reworked by Wheel to Wheel Inc. of Troy Michigan, with more compression(10.5:1), more cam(208 duration at 0.050, 0.544-inch lift, 116 degree LDA), and a K&N filter element in a modified airbox, and custom headers with dual cats. The wheels are 20x8.5s with Goodyear Eagle LS 295/55 VR20 meats. To foster the el cheapo mode, the truck features a cloth bench seat and rubber flooring. " I even tried for crank windows and a heater delete option," cracked Henyon. "But A/C is standard and it actually would have cost me more for the manual windows." The SS will be available during the first half of 2003 through any Chevy dealer. -Ro McGonegal This truck differs frm the Silverado SS(even though it's a Silverado and called SS) in that it's a regular cab short bed with two wheel drive, and a manual transmission. The Silvedo SS is an extended cab with full size bed, all wheel drive and an automatic. The SS should also make more than the Silverado's 345 hp, posiibly around 400. It should be as quick or a little quicker than a stock Lightning, but not near as fast as the 500 hp Dodge. If you are wondering , I have no clue about how to post pics, so too see them you need to check out page 18 of the December Hot Rod magazine. |
Sounds like a nice truck, but I'll take a F-150 Lightening anyday.:)

Originally posted by s2ktonv Sounds like a nice truck, but I'll take a F-150 Lightening anyday.:) Not Surprising, the another GM falls short of expectation. I wouldn't mind a Lightning in my driveway. |
Depends on who's expectations you're comparing it to, Kazi. GM has been successful with their S-10 Xtreme, which offers nothing more than shorter/stiffer springs, fender accents, 16" aluminum wheels, badging and optional graphics.
This truck is essentially the same thing, but with mild performance tweaks. Chevrolet in their release said that this was not a direct target to the Lightening...Dodge's Ram SRT/10 is more along the lines of a Lightening slayer. For $23,000, this truck doesnt' sound like a bad deal, if you're into that sort of market. |
Did anybody notice the price here? $23 grand! Hell, I'd buy it for a tow vehicle straight up.

It'll probably be barebones knowing how GM is on a major decontenting spree right now. But with the SS monkier, it is hardly a Ford Lightning fighter. I'd still take a Lightning over the Silverado SS. If I was on a budget, I'll take the GMC twin. Although it's basically the same product, the front fascia looks 1000x better than the Chevy Avalanche looking grill and lights on the Silverado. |
Are you talking about the one with the AWD and Escalade motor? I'm talking about the 6-liter RWD thing that is going to cost 23 grand according to this.
|
The 6.0 liter RWD GMC is the C3, which costs around $40,000.
|
Nope, just a regular Sierra 1500 fullsize. The Silverado SS isn't anything special, IMO.
