Ford recalling 1.2 million trucks and vans
Recall is in addition to 3.8 million recalled last year for potential fire hazard.

Thursday, August 3, 2006; Posted: 12:05 p.m. EDT (16:05 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling 1.2 million large pick-up trucks, SUVs and vans because of a problem with the vehicles' cruise control system that could lead to a fire.

This recall is in addition to 3.8 million Ford vehicles that were recalled for the same problem last year.

The vehicles being recalled are: certain model year 1994 to 2002 F-250 through F-550 Super Duty trucks; 2000-2002 Excursion SUVs; 1994 to 1996 Econoline vans; 1996 to 2002 E-450 vans and 1998 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs.

Diesel-powered vehicles are not affected.

In rare cases, the company said in a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, brake fluid can leak through the cruise control deactivation switch causing corrosion in the switch. This can cause the switch to overheat and possibly burn.

The switch shuts off the cruise control when the driver firmly steps on the brakes. The switch is located under the hood of the vehicle and is attached to the brake master cylinder on one end and wired to the cruise control on the other.

On most of its models, Ford designed the switch to be powered -- or "hot" -- at all times, even when the vehicle is off. Inside the switch, a thin film barrier separates brake fluid from the switch's electrical components.

In January, 2005, Ford recalled certain Bronco, Expedition, Lincoln Blackwood and Lincoln Navigator SUVs as well well as some Ford Ford F-150 and F-250 pick-ups for the same problem. A total of 3.8 million vehicles were recalled at that time.

Earlier, in September 2005, Ford recalled approximately 800,000 F-150 pick-ups for the problem. The company believes it has now recalled all vehicles that could have this problem, a Ford spokeswoman said.

Owners who have questions or concerns about the recall can contact Ford at 866-436-7332 or NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.

Ford stock was down Thursday morning on the reported doubling of second-quarter loss and the recall news.

Here is the deal:

16M Fords have this cruise control device and they are failing. Even internal Ford tests showed how dangerous the device was.

Recalls So Far:
1M in 2004
3.8M in 2005
1.2M in 2006

Leaving about 10M that still have this dangerous defective Ford designed device.

My sister has a 2004 4X4 Lariat Supercrew that her boss gave to her and she's going through a divorce, so it's not in her name, but does anyone know if her model is affected, cause if they sent out recall notices, she wouldn't have gotten one, so I was just wondering... Also, her engine (5.4L) is getting so noisy it sounds like a diesel running, but noone @ the dealerships can seem to hear it (my guess is this is because she's a female and all), but it's still under extended warranty and she want's it fixed before it blows up, and I've heard other people have had this problem with the 5.4's also... Anyone know about any of this or had any experiences with it? Thanks for listening

call a dealer, give them the VIN number, and they should be able to look it up.

Bad engineering, crappy plants. Ford will circle the drain and no one will pluck them out of the sink.

ford has had a bad recall PR since the pinto incidents that whole "it would cost less to let the ones who get hurt sue us" thing was a looked down apon by most.

:edit:
and one might think they just don't have the money to deal with all these recalls at once. imagine how much it would cost them to fix all 16M at once.

sherwood...you make an interesting point...Ford knows it has 16m dangerous vehicles on the road and is doing as little as possible to recall them b/c it costs them money...Ford only acts when they are forced to by NHTSA (give them major fines and penalties - reason why they recalled 3.8m trucks last year as they would be hit with over $1B in penalties) or when the public finally catches on and they react to pictures of deaths or massive injuries caused by Ford products

as much as Billy Bob Ford touts he give's a crap about your safety and the environment and the world, etc...it's just all talk and no action...Ford is a company that has intentionally repeatedly sold extremely unsafe products to consumers with the only concern is profit for their real customers...the shareholder

this is the death of the big 3...they care more about thier shareholders and react to them rather than their lifeblood of customers...Ford just slowly kills off their customer base with dangerous vehicles

This is another major Ford Cruise Control defect...the uncontrollable acceleration (not fires themselves)

Plaintiffs Expose Ford's Safety Problems With Cruise Control on Ford Explorer

Aug. 7, 2006--A plaintiff's verdict of $18,000,000 was announced late last night after three weeks of trial by a team of several nationally known litigators, including J. Edward Bell, III, against Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F - News) as the result of a fatal 1999 car accident involving a 1995 Ford Explorer, which also left another passenger a quadriplegic.

The defective cruise control that suddenly accelerated was at the heart of the case. The auto defect claims were strengthened by many expert witnesses, including Antony Anderson, a PhD Electrical Engineer, who testified that electrical problems caused the cruise control to malfunction. Anderson said, "It would have been very simple for Ford to prevent this accident." Patricia Carter was killed in the accident and Sonya Watson was rendered a quadriplegic. The jury determined that both Patricia Carter and Sonya Watson were wearing their seatbelts.

During the trial jurors were shown car parts and replicas and also personally examined the remains of the Ford Explorer involved in the accident. One of the plaintiffs' experts, Bill Williams, showed the jury models of the parts of the Explorer and explained the defects found in the vehicle.

Wally Fayssoux, one of the attorneys for the plaintiffs said, "This was a historic verdict. However, it will never restore the life of Patricia Carter, nor change the horrible condition in which Sonya Watson was left."

The lawsuits filed against Ford Motor Co., TRW Vehicle Safety Systems Inc. and D&D Motors questioned the safety of the vehicle's seat belts and electronic cruise control. Co-counsel and automotive defect attorneys J. Edward Bell, III of the Bell Legal Group LLC, Georgetown, S.C., Kevin Dean of Motley-Rice LLC, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and James W. Fayssoux, Jr. of Anderson Fayssoux and Chasteen, Greenville, S.C., participated in the trial on behalf of the plaintiffs.

The case, Watson vs. Ford, filed and tried in South Carolina Circuit Court, Greenville, South Carolina, was the result of an automobile accident that occurred on Interstate 385 in Laurens County. Sonya Watson, who was 17 at the time of the accident, was driving the Explorer when it suddenly accelerated and "took off". When pumping the breaks did not work, she reached down for the pedal and because of her seatbelt, could not reach the gas pedal to attempt to stop the vehicle. At that time, the car began swerving and then rolled four times. Both Watson and her aunt, Patricia Carter were ejected from the Ford Explorer.

"This cruise control system uses outdated and unreliable technology, but Ford chose this cruise control system because it was cheap," said plaintiff's attorney Kevin Dean. According to attorney J. Edward Bell, III, Ford has literally received thousands of complaints on it's cruise control systems installed in Ford vehicles between 1992-2002. "Even after discovering the cruise control was plagued by dangerous safety problems, Ford has tried to hide the issue and has not tried to correct the design defects," says J. Edward Bell, III.
