Default Odyssey Dead Cylinder - How Happened and Options

2001 Odyssey EX; 128K miles; bought new and well serviced.

First: van rpm would stutter, like it was going to putter out, when stopped at a light.

Second: after some weeks, the stutter started happening when driving down the highway - followed by engine light and TCS light. Five codes registered: Cyl 2 misfire; Cyl 6 misfire; Cyl 5 misfire ....etc, all misfires.

Mechanic looks at plug #1 and it looked awful. With new plug, still same problem. Did a compression check and found nothing - as in no compression at all!!!

The mechanic was surprised, since this engine usually does not have such problems like this.

How could this happen? What are my options??

PS. Engine always used oil from day 1, which is unusual for this engine, but I lived with it. I would always add 1 or so quarts between oil changes. Could this be a clue - a valve not seated properly??

random missfires. thats a headache.

you probably have a big vacuum leak in 0one of your hoses inside the engine. or your camshaft sensor is begenning to fail...

Ah, perhaps I must clarify. The compression was zero in cylinder #1. No compression found at all.

zero? wet and dry compression? if its both, u got a burnt valve, hole in the piston, flat camlobe. but im not sure how this affects other cylinders throwing in random misfires.

I am not sure about wet and dry. The mechanic said, "I didn't measure any compression in #1." "It may be an exhaust valve." "I hope it is not the piston." "I just did three CRVs with this type of problem, but for this engine it is odd."

The last time I had the plugs changed. The mechanic said that one of the plugs was much worse than all the others. I guess that it was cylinder #1.

The van has been running perfect and seems to have full power. Now, it runs rough with a little shake. There has not been any strange noises - since I imagine a broken piston would cause.

The codes were read at AutoZone - after a highway trip in which the lights came on and stayed on. The engine light would sometimes flash.

Do you mean all three or at least one on the three (burnt valve, hole in the piston, flat camlobe)? All the same cost to repair? Must the other 2 cylinders on that side be repaired (valve jobs) also?

Mechanic has it apart and one of the exhaust valves has a hole in it. He didn't mention any other problems. He has no idea why this particular valve did this. He will replace the 2 exhaust valves.

maybe you have a metal particle that was able to get around the air filter and went inside your combution chamber. that is very odd.

It may end up happening again after the repair, I had the similar problem on a 98 4 cylinder accord, I replaced the intake and exhaust valves on cylinder 1, and a few months later the customer came back and it happened again to the same valves, no clue why. Good Luck I hope you don't have the same problem.

maybe that cylinder is too clcose to the egr port. and when egr comes on, its the first one to get the hot inert gas and because it happens over and over again, your valve gets burnt out.

Valves were replaced and van is running well now and not throwing any codes. I have the one bad valve as a souvenir - it is like someone took a bite out of it. No other problems. I hope this one doesn't return!
