Default 2000 Odyssey, Check light, p0401, replaced EGR, light back on.

Hi there,

My brother's 2000 Odyssey had a check engine light on, the code was p0401.

I had the exact same code on my 99 accord ex, so I replaced the EGR valve. Reset the light, no problems since.

I repleced the EGR in his van, reset the light, and a few days later the light came back on - same code.

Any ideas?

is p0401 the EGR code?

I know they got an EGR update kit from Honda for this year.

Also, never replace the part...always try to figure out why is it comming on.
Is it voltage problems? Intermitted problems?

While I don't have any suggetions I also have a similiar problem.

Bought our 2000 Odyssey last summer. Days before Christmas check engine light came on. Took it to a mechanic, who said it was the spark plugs and had those replaced. 3 days later, light came on again. 1 month later had oxygen sensor replaced (this is what the mechanic who did the estimate says is the problem). 2 days out of the shop, less than 100 miles, light is back on. Both mechanic and auto zone say the code the second time read right for the oxygen sensor, but after having it replaced why would the light come back on?

Any ideas where to go from here?

You probably just screwed him out of $150. It's very rare that the EGR valve needs replacing itself, as the electronics in it are sound. Typically, the ports in the intake manifold and block get clogged up from carbon. The only way to fix it is to remove the manifold, clean it up, and put it back together.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice on here...I've taken my car to 3 different shops, and none of them actually fixed the problem with my EGR ports or knew what was wrong. They all just said that there was nothing wrong with my EGR valve. I found diagrams on here and fixed it with a friend of mine in about an hour- at NO cost. I would have kept shelling out money if I hadn't found this forum!

Hi, I followed the Honda Service Bulletin above to clean the carb in the intake manifold and the EGR valve. After I put the parts back with the new gaskets, the engine idling is rough. It fluctuates from 1300-2000 rpm every second. What did i do wrong? What should I pay more attention to?
