Civic Type R pistons
 
I have a 96 GSR with all the normal ricer stuff. I was thinking about puttin some Civic type R pistons in. Now this would raise the compression to about 12.04, and anyone knows that will be quite fast. All i want to know is if someone has done anyhtin like this and what their results were. And if there were any problems in the swap.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't just swap out pistons with out some serious benchmark/timing/etc..

YEs there a few sidesteps, but since there both B series engines not too much is need. I have a guy who will do it for pretty cheap and all i need to do is buy some new piston rings.

a high compression ratio doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be fast.

and yes I'm sure its been done.

And yes, it has been done. I hope you have some decent octane gas where you live, and you know how to tune.

How much power you make from swapping the pistons depends on what other sort of mods you have. What's on the car right now? I wouldn't go ripping open the motor just yet if there are other means of making some power left.

Yes i know that higher compression does not mean "go fast" as my naive statement might have proven. But as the defintion of an engine goes, the high the compression the more power. Yes i know there are limits because of the risk of early combustion but i do not intend to go up to the 13's. I was just talkin to a Honda Technician and he suggested it and i looked into it. But i currently have- Greddy Evo Exhaust, AEM CAI, and a set of DC sports headers on the way. Now i am not really new to the SCC universe but i know i have a lot to learn. I plan on goin all motor, hence the reason for the high compression. I know there is a lot to do before this but i was told by the Honda Tech that it would dramatically increase the power. Please be free to offer suggestions on what to do before this swap and if it should be done or not.

It would dramatically increase power if you had performance cams.





And PCTs with GSR head are 12.3:1 compression ratio. 12 flat would be a B16 head.

As always, tuning is the key. My suggestion would be to look into getting a new Intake Mani, one that will flow more air than your stock unit. Now the gs-r mani isn't bad, but there is better out there. I would also put some serious consideration into some good performance cams, cam gears obviously too. Finally, a good engine management + some fuel system upgrades will make the most of your setup. Just my $.02...

One final thought...If you are planning on putting down this kind of power...you might want to look into a performace clutch setup...

If all you have is i/h/e then there's no reason to open up the motor yet. It will not "dramatically increase power" by simply replacing pistons.

You can get a lot more power from a set of cams.
