Think my mechanic screwed me over on my t.b. replacement

Well, the final bill ended up being 625.00. They replaced the timing belt(70.00), water pump(128), and some other misc. parts( gaskets, all drive belts, valve adjustment, etc). Also they did my oil for $33, and I know that deal sucked b/c the dealership charges $20. So did I get screwed over, or is this the norm for a checkup/replacement job?

Heck, that costs more than when I did the 60k service to my ZTT! former.

Labor is a *****, which is why I do my own work.

I'm not to that level yet. =\ Plus don't have the time, wish I did though because buying the parts yourself and doing it yourself ends up being a lot cheaper(was with the header)

It seems like a great price to me, especially including parts.

Think about it this way...
If he changed your oil with Mobil1, its $20 in oil and another $5 for the filter. So with tax and change, etc, he probably changed your oil for $6-$7.

If the Tbelt and WP cost you $200 total, and the oil was $33, he did the labor for less than $400. Thats including the valve adjustment (~$70), gaskets and labor. Sounds good to me.

That's why I think it's a hassle to do it yourself on some of the parts sometimes. Frustration and stuff, unless you have plenty of time to screw up and fix it, and patience. Don't get me wrong, I admire whoever hook up most of their parts...right.

drdavidge 07-16-2002 08:37 AM

sounds about right. you prob could have gotten it a little cheaper, but you definately didnt get ripped off.

95'IntegraSE 07-16-2002 09:10 AM

they screwed you!!!!!!!

newgsrdriver 07-16-2002 09:46 AM

Did you read the post? How was he screwed?

You do know dealers charge anywhere from $350-$550 for JUST the timing belt/WP.

Yeah it sounds a bit high, but look at it this way...If something happpens the next 12k or 12 months that was related to the repair the dealer fixes it at no charge. BTW, next time go to the Honda stealership to get your work done. They offer coupons for work that they do and they are willing to work on Tegs. :) I have found that it is much cheape than taking it to the Acura stealership.

Here's a breakdown of the price. Reason I was thinking that it was a little off was Acura was offering a 249.99 deal for timing belt. Factor in the water pump at the same 120-130 amount and it's still a lot less... guess the gaskets and all that add up:

1 Oil Filter - 9.80
20/50 oil - 9.20 (live in the desert so I'm assuming that's why they used a heavier weight)
1 Fan belt - 19.66
1 Fan belt - 21.67
1 Fan belt - 27.93 (what the hell are these? How many FAN belts can I have? Shouldn't there be other names for these.. fan, A/C, what else?)
1 Timing belt - 69.34
1 Water Pump - 129.03
1 Valve Gasket - 17.72
4 rubber gromets - 18.32
21/2 collant - 20.00

Lube and Oil Filter - 14.00
WaterPump, TB, Fan Belts, Valve cover gasket, valve adjustment - 240.00

Sound right?
