its smoother for the flow of air, there is no bouncing of air back and forth. kind of like a smooth intake pipe vs. the stock one that has ripples in it.

If you're building a normally aspirated motor, then a good port/polish job will gain you about 10 hp or perhaps more.
I don't see how a ported head and nitrous are mutually exclusive. But if you only get one "big mod" then that's your thing.
