Power steering leak
My integra is leaking quite a bit of power steering fluid onto the exhaust pipe which is causing a big smokey mess. The pressure hose and the return line look fine. Its not spraying fluid everywhere. wherever the leak is coming from I can't see it at all. is there something else that i am missing?

if its burning up on your exhaust it has to be coming from near the rack itself, what car/engine is it?

Its a 98 RS all stock.

need new rack and pinion. or maybe its just an oil filter leak just a thought
|
I was afraid that might be the case. it has 270,000 miles on it. is that easy enough to replace myself? thats something that ive never messed with before. its not the oil filter though.

yeah that looks terrible. it COULD be a motor oil leak, from the back of block, perhaps the oil filter, the oil pressure warning light switch, lots of things.
are u losing a lot of PS fluid in the reservoir? |
Ugh, just from the pic it looks like a seal in the rack is leaking. Any major loss from the res?

honestly i just had my power steering rack replaced, acura did it for be because of the warranty i had, but they have to take the engine out to get to it, well so they said, unless you know what you are doing with it, i wouldnt suggest it, and it was over 1000 dollars to get fixed because you have to get an alignment right after you put it in, the car is undrivable until then. so if you know how to align the car, go for it, i didnt pay 1000 though, but that is what the invoice was. sorry to hear that, i had a power steering leak as well, im being redundant, but it was not nearly that bad, 99 gs by the way

It is time consuming to replace the rack itself. It takes a little more than basic knowledge to do, but if you have a shop manual and patience, it can be done yourself.

are u losing a lot of PS fluid in the reservoir? Yeah, if I fill it up and go for a 30 or 40 minute drive it will be almost empty. |
