Any ideas

My '95 GSR has been humming along without problems until today when all of the sudden the car lurched while shifting. I turned around and came home only to find that now I cannot shift into any gear. In fact, if I push hard enough to get into gear, the car dies :( Now, the car shifts just fine when it's turned off. Then when I turn it back on while in gear, something under the hood makes a whining noise.

In the past, I had problems shifting and added Synchro Mesh and it worked great. But even then the shifting problems were gradual and never would it not go into gear. Do I have the same problem just more advanced or could it be something else? I do have the original clutch in it as well; 168,000 miles.

I would inspect the clutch and throwout bearing.

And let me add that the clutch is harder to push in than it was before.

Your clutch most likely has taken a shit. Not bad for 168k on OEM.

yep 168 on a stock clutch has served its intended service life and then some.

make sure when you get it replaced that you replace both the slave and master clutch cylinders

That's what I told somebody. It's in the hands of a mechanic that I know now. He's going to call me and let me know exactly what it is. His initial diagnosis is that it is the clutch. He'll let me know what it is sometime today or tomorrow.

Thanks for the input guys.
