Default Crank Pulley

I need to take off the crank pulley and I haven't done it before. Is there something on the transmission side that I can hold still or would an impact gun be a good way to go? I'm not in a hurry but i don't know how to remove it. Thanks.

Why do you need to remove it? Are you putting on an aftermarket one? You won't notice much of a difference. Unless it is broken then I would leave it alone.

Anyways, to answer your question, an impact would work best. If you try to do it by hand the engine is going to want to crank and you'll have to improvise and think of a way to keep it from turning. With an impact, it zaps it off before the crank even knows what happened. Be sure not to lose or misplace the key.

^ perhaps he's replacing the timing belt.

anyway, all i used was a breaker bar with a long pipe over it. it's been a while since i did mine, but if memory serves, i think i had someone step on the brakes just to avoid rotating the engine.

and yeah, make sure not to loose that key.

I'm just tearing it all down. I'm going to take it to a machine shop when I get some more cash. The engine is on a stand so I'll just use the impact gun. Thanks guys.

Well I am having a hard time taking it off... I just want to make sure it isn't a reverse thread.

Default special tool

i have had a similar problem with my friends teg its a 93 LS non-vtec, i called the dealer and asked how to take it off. depending on where you are located the acura dealer loaned out the tool for a refundable $75. it backs up the crank pulley to the ground, then you use a breaker bar to turn the bolt. the head of the tool was hexagonal and went in the pulley and a long handle on it went to brace the motor from turning.

Yeah I saw that in my book... I might end up doing that. I wanted to try and use the impact gun.

One last question, when I take the pulley off, is the timing belt going to come undone? I need to remove the timing belt cover to exchange a motor mount so I can get this damn engine in. I really didn't want to mess with the timing.

make sure its at top dead center and the beginning of the intake stroke on cylinder 1.

that way you wont have to mess with the timing.

once you get the bolt off, the timing belt shouldnt come off on its own, the belt tensioner will still have tension on it.

a big impact gun will help here. or there are honda specific pulley bolt tools also.
