Default installing cams and springs

Will it be too difficult to install cams, cam gears, springs, and timing belt myself. I've read a few DIY threads, but i have never done it before. Or is it worth/safer just paying to get it done. If it matters B18C5 and Toda head components.

get a helms manual if you want to try it yourself. there are a lot of torque specs you have to know.

And you will need a few special tools. A quality valve spring compressor, an air fitting, and feeler gauges to set the valve lash. Look in the FAQ for a HELMS in PDF format.

When i reinstall the new cams, will the motor run with no tuning. I have hondata to tune it but will the ITR base map hold up to get the motor started and running? Will the hondata w/ wideband O2 sensor be enough to tune the new setup? Oh it is Toda spec B cams, btw.

never install cams without tuning any tuning. especially big cams like toda b's. tuning is the key to a lasting motor that makes power.

Its not much of a hassle to get a car tuned. No sense in dropping big bones on a set of cams if youre not going to tune it. Tuning, aside from longevity, will make the most of your mods and like any major engine mod, you tune to "teach" your ECU how to use your setup. Its like putting your 6 year old on a bike and sending them down the street without showing them how to do it. Your ECU will have NO idea what to do with an aftermarket setup like what you speak of unless you tune it.

Your better of bring the head to the machine shop and Having them install the valvesprings and retainers, it cost around $90. i actually just had buddy club valvesprings, retainers installed and valve seals replaced for $127.

If you have never done it before it's a long process. Make sure you have a helms and learn as much as you can about the project before you start. As far as tuning, your car will run temporarily. If you have to run it for a while without tuning then at least get a chip with a basemap for your mods.

Thanks for all the info. I already have a helms manual, so that will make the installation smoother. I have a hondata S300 on the car now, specifically to run the cams im installing. I guess my only real concern is finding someone to tune it. I have very limited tuning experience and zero experience when it comes to the cams im installing. Time to do some searching.
