Default ABS question

I did some testing on my 1990 GS last night, and it didn't seem to have ABS. I slid for a good half second on new (looked to be less than a year old) pavement and felt nothing to do with ABS. Does this mean that it is most likely malfunctioning, and if so, what is most likely not working on it? Or is it just that it isn't a very sensitive system?

Does the ABS light come on when you turn the car on?

nope. no lights come on other than the expected ones (ebrake, seatbelt, battery for a second). no ABS light.

if I'm fine knowing I don't have ABS, is there anything wrong with driving without it working?

If there is no light, then it definitely isn't working. Shouldn't be a problem with it off, but if everything is there, then why not have it work? There shouldn't be any negative effects from having it off aside from it being a little less safe.
