air tube for cat?
im about to buy a 3" MAGNAFLOW HIGH FLOW CAT and it asks if i would like to buy the air tube kit..........what the hell is an air tube kit and IS it needed?
The air pump is powered by a belt off the engine, like a power steering pump or an A/C compressor. It's main goal in life is to pump air straight into the cat in cars that don't have a high enough oxygen content in their exhaust to burn up the bad stuff in the cat. The additional oxygen lets the catalytic converter burn off all the extra NOx, CO, and HCx emissions.
My RX-7 came with one, a lot of domestics have them, the S2000 even has one.

S2k: the most aggressive I4 ever to be marketed, so it will puke extra emmissions: needs an airpump.
Domestic V6's and V8's: huge, ineffiecient engines: needs an airpump.
Mazda Rotaries: Needs fuel to keep them cool and for slight lubrication issues: needs an airpump.
Your car is too effiencient to need an airpump in stock form. That's good, because emissions inspectors willl not have to look for them in the future (hence why my '7 is almost a year out of inspection... the air pump is gone!)
