Maintenance Q's for my new 95 Teg' please help
Hi folks,
Got my "new" Teg and now I am doing all the maintenance on it before I start really driving it, I checked out all the front suspension/brakes and driveshafts last night and it looks great, however there are a few more things I want to do: Change engine oil (it needs it) Change gearbox oil (its a manual tranny) Change brake fluid (its dirty) Change timing belt (dunno when it was done last) I could probably do the timing belt myself, but I am so busy I don't think I have time, so I think I will get it done at the stealership, any idea how much I should pay for this? My questions are: What viscosity oil should I use in the engine? (I will be using mineral oil, not synthetic) What type/viscosity oil should I use in the gearbox? Anything I should watch when changing the brake fluid? I have done loads of brake fluid jobs before, but I didn't know if there was anything specific in the integra I should do, I got DOT3 brake fluid as I won't be driving the car that hard. Any other maintenance advice you have would be greatly appreciated, I've never owned a Japanese car before, but so far I am really impressed! Thanks! Chris (Massachusetts) :D |

If you're using dino oil I recommend in the warmer seasons you use 10W-30, and in the winter season use 5W-30 (thinner, better startups). For the transmission, just pick up 3 quarts of Honda MTF...it's probably the best stuff for your tranny (although others go with expensive MTF's). Brake fluid change is the same with almost any modern car...so nothing is different. By the way...is this teg a GSR or LS/RS/SE? |
I use 5w-30 non-synth in my engine.
The owner's manual calls for 10w-30 in the gearbox, but Honda has since created their own MTF, so I'd use THAT. (Every 30k.) You have a separate ABS fluid reservoir & bleed valve. I've described changing that somewhere, search can probably find it. Change coolant? The corrosion-inhibitors can't be measured with specific gravity. They get 'used up' in about 2 or 3 years. Adjust valve lash every 30k. |
I got a 1995 LS Special Edition, it has all the toys...leather seats, cruise control, nice Sony stereo system etc etc its a dark metallic green with a tan interior. Alloy wheels also which are in great condition.
At the moment I just want to get the car running and all the little things fixed, but I am thinking about modding a little in the future! |
i always change plugs wires cap rotor fuel filter too.... not too much $ or time to get that stuff done but the car should run lots better when thats all changed...

Hi, The plugs wires and cap were changed by the previous owner already, he also fitted a new radiator and the coolant looks brand new I checked it already.
One other thing I forgot to ask was, is the brake fluid resevoir and the clutch fluid resevoir the same thing? Do I just look for a bleed nipple on the clutch slave cylinder and get my girlfriend to pump away on the clutch? Or does the clutch have its own resevoir that I have to keep topped up as I bleed it out? |
OW!! My girl just called and said the Acura dealer said its $490 for a timing belt change....
Anyone in massachusetts know somewhere I could get this done cheaper? If not I guess I'll take some time off work to do it myself... Thanks! Chris |
Clutch has it's own fluid reservoir. You'll see it.
Loop a string around the clutch lever because when you bleed it there's no spring behind the pedal. When you pull it up, don't let the pedal snap up, just lift it with the string while your foot is on it. |
Thanks, I have ordered one of those timing belt/water pump/tensioner bearing kits from prostreetonline, will I be able to use the old cam cover gasket and water pump gaskets? Or will I have to get new ones from the acura dealer?

The waterpump probably comes with it's gasket (O-ring).
I re-use the valve cover gasket a few times until it starts getting hard & brittle. If you don't get a valve cover gasket you aren't gonna waste tons of work by changing it later. VC gasket is really easy. DON'T overtighten the VC hold-down nuts. There's rubber grommets under the 8(?) valve cover mounting nuts. There's a rubber ring gasket for each of the 4 spark plug tubes. Sometimes they're all included in a VC 'gasket', sometimes not. Ask when you order it. |
