Need estimate on friend's LS-VTEC setup
Before I get started, I want to mention that I hate bench racing, and fully intend to go to the track with my friend's final product. However, his engine is sitting in his garage, and I'd like to get an idea of what he'll eventually be capable of.
His car.... 91 Integra LS 5-speed The engine about to go in--- B18A1 bottom end B16A head new JE pistons (CR 10.1) "type-r" rods, valves, and springs Mugan (sp?) ECU (for "frankenstien setup") Cat-back exhaust and CAI. Let it be known that I know very little about hondas... this is what he told me his setup would be, and I don't know if it'd work or not. I've spent most of my time tuning and researching VW engines. I have a VR6 jetta with some work... nothing special (yet). I can kick his ass at the track all day right now, but I know his new engine will likely change that. What can I expect him to do? How much wHP ? 1/4 times ? Yes, I've searched... all I find is info about crappy reliability and how a GSR motor is a better bet... He says 260+ whp. I say bullshit, or with a big turbo. |
the engine will work but
if you're running type R rods, you lost stroke.... so you lose power... get some rods meant for an LS, eagle H beams or crower econo billets will do you just fine. he wont make 260+ whp that much i can assure you but he will make some reasonable power. the engine will be plenty dependable if it is put together right, if not... you're in for a big bill |
He can't run ITR rods unless he also has an ITR crank.
Depending on the level of tuning and the exhaust setup I'd say somewhere in the range of about 170 to 180 hp to the wheels. 260 whp all-motor is possible, but would require far more work than your friend has done. |
Thing is, about my particular friend... like many other young tuners, he tends to blow things out of porportion...
170-180 to the wheels eh... that's about what I was guessing, giving him (or rather, the engine builders) the benefit of the doubt. I'll have to ask for a dyno on this "monster" when it's finished. How much torque will this thing put out? I imagine not much more than a stock LS block, since his displacement is still 1.8L. I doubt the overall VE of the engine went up very much either, just a bit in the higher RPM and with an increased redline.. Anyway, thanks and keep it coming. |
the torque numbers will be respectable for a b-series....
|
as in... 140 wheel torque ?
|
If he is using B18C length rods with a B18A/B crank, the engine won't turn over. The pistons will slam into the head and the engine will not rotate.
|
Perhaps the guy is over-using the "type-R" moniker to make the engine sound more exotic.
|
sounds like a reasonable guess to me.... people hear Type R and go nuts ... unfortunately, most of em dont have a clue
|
He already claims Type-R pistons and rods on his stock LS block... but... i dont know... he certainly can't keep up on the straights as it is, and I only run low 15's. From all the talking he's done, I'd expect 13's or better.
Sometimes I wonder if he's just full of it or not... but... we'll have to see in a few weeks. |
