As some of you may have seen in the For Sale forum, I am looking for a 97-98 ITR. Well today I found a 2001 PY in Tampa at a Subaru dealer, and it was only $16,800. So I thought that I would take it for a test drive.
Couple of questions 1. will a check engine light disable VTEC engagement?? The CE was from either a faulty gas cap or a leak around the fuel pump. I didn't really feel or hear VTEC engage like I thought it would. I know that it is discreet on a stcok motor, but I couldn't tell at all. Also I had some problems downshifting into second, I mean I could not get it in at all for most of the attempts I made. Clutch all the way in, no dice. It finally went in with some more pressure on the shifter than I really felt comfortable with. Rev matching didn't seem to help that much either. Upshifting 1->2 was no problem though.
I have already decided not to get it and wait for what I really want, but I am curious as to what these problems could be caused by. This R seemed to have been raced hard and put away wet.

If I recall correctly, that ITR is Blake's. It's a previous Pike's Peak car. No offense to blake, but I'd probably keep looking. So where in tampa do you live? (st pete here)

Yeah Blakes, uh...was definitely used to its potential shall we say

A CEL may or may not cause VTEC to be disabled. If you were having those troubles just on a test-drive, Id think Id pass.
