how to check if the engine is worn out

because i am going to get a second hand one and almost everyone i have talked to said that 2nd hand type R engine is all worn out and screwed up...so i am trying to find out what to look for when getting a 2nd hand one thankz.

a compression test is one way to find out what shape the engine is in.

A good way to find out if it has in fact been driven really hard, is to check the engine mounts. They can rub some of the paint off under extreme shifts.
