Just picked up my '03 EX V6 Sedan w/ Navi. this afternoon... has 23 miles on it right now and I'm just wondering if anyone has advice for me concerning the do's and dont's during the "break-in" period. Any other advice concerning things to consider and/or watch out for would be greatly appreciated. Pix will be coming soon

don't go past 55 for 1000 miles ... after the 1st 1000 miles, change your oil.

 

are u serious? i think some people have to go on freeway...i think its dont go over 75.....and dont WOT for 600 mi....and the oil change...1000 is just overdoing it....change it at 3000-3750...a lil more or lil less depending how u drive.

 

Accord 4cyl sedan. Honda service manager told me first oil change for V6 was 4000 miles...5000 miles for the 4 cyl. He said Honda uses a special conditioning oil in their new engines and not to change it until the specified mileage. I drive a stretch of freeway to and from work everyday so I drive anywhere from 65 to 80 mph. Took a 200 mile trip the day after I picked up the car and drove at normal highway speeds. I avoided full throttle starts and took it easy on the brakes for a few hundred miles. Other than that no special break in. At 4700 miles the car is running quiet and smooth and I average about 34 mpg.

 

According to the manual 600 miles is good enough for the break in period and Honda suggested don't change the oil until 7500 miles.

Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?
Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.
American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions.

 

but the thing is....no one really drives under normal conditions....which is like no stops and not reving as high...also not driving for a long period...i drive a lot...and sometimes redline it...therefore imma change it every 3000-4000 miles....it all depends on ur dirivng...u drive like a grandma...then maybe u can wait the 7000+miles...if not...then get it every 3750 like the manual says.

 

Best advise for first 100K miles: Don't crash. After 100K miles - get a new car.

 

Change oil at 3750 as in the manual, earlier than that is unnecessary and probably does more harm than good because of the special break-in aditives.

As far as break-in. No wide open throttle, no hard stops (for 500 miles), and keep rpm under 4000 for the first 1000 miles. After that, the engine is still not totally broken in, but you can drive normally. I would not start abusing yoiur car with high revs or wide open throttle starts until about 2500 miles.

Now, depending on your engine, staying under 4000 rpm can be a piece of cake, or somewhat of a chore. I'm sure the v6 will stay under 4K in any form of normal driving, even 80 mph on the freeway. The Prelude was another matter, 60 mph in 5th gear is 3100 rpm. 60 mph in 4th gear is 4000 rpm. 80 mph in 5th gear is 4000 rpm.

Oh, you should refrain from going a set speed for the 1st 1000 miles. In other words, don't get on the freeway and cruise at 70 mph until your car has 1000 miles on it. VARY YOUR SPEEDS. Do some stop and go or nieghborhood.

 

I stayed under 80 on the first 600 miles because I drive freeways, and changed my oil at 1500 miles. Am I okay?
