I tend to let the weather dictate what would work best for the car.

In the winter, I go with the 5W, usually synthetic or blend. That way you get good flow early, when its cold and thick, and get the least amount of initial wear at start up.

In the summer, I'll go back to the 10W, just because it is fairly warm already from the get-go, and I know I'll be driving the thing really hard, and want that little bit more of thickness between the parts. I never see a MPG change. And if I did, I'd chalk it up to my harder driving habits anyway.

i talked to my mechanic about that.. if you're in SoCal where the weather doesn't change that much.. go with the thinner oil for newer engines.. but if you've got an older engine (like.. 50k+ miles) go with a thicker oil to help preserve its condition.

If the weather in your area doesn't go below 40 degrees, then you'll be fine with 10-30w oil.
