Man wanted drugs, calls cops by mistake
CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) - It's absolutely the last number to call to get "hooked up" with illegal drugs. Erie County Sheriff's deputies show what happened when a caller dialed the Crime Stoppers hotline late Monday.
Senior Detective Alan Rozansky of the Erie County Sheriff's office answers the phone saying, "Crime Stoppers." It's how Sr. Detective Rozansky always answers the Crime Stoppers tip phone, which he carries. At noon on Monday, he got a call from someone who apparently misdialed and didn't hear how Rozansky answers the phone.
"Indicated to me that he wanted to score. He wanted to hook up. He wanted to buy some drugs," said Rozansky.
Rozansky didn't miss a beat. The narcotics detective played right along.
Rozansky said, "I couldn't believe that he really was doing this and then he said. "Are you sure this is Eduardo," or whatever, and I go, "Yea, I got a new phone, it's hard." And he says, "Okay, good, good," and I actually was stunned he'd actually follow through and meet us, but he did."
He met undercover officers at Main and Transit. They didn't arrest him, but used him as an informant to lead them to a supplier who was making a sale in the parking lot of a restaurant down the road at Transit and Walden in Depew. Police arrested 35-year-old Tracy Tarsey of Depew trying to sell her own prescription of the painkiller Suboxone to 27-year-old Hank Salisbury of South Buffalo.
"It isn't a Buffalo problem. It's Grand Island down to Springville. We have a future generation of junkies out there using these pills," said Rozansky.
A misdialed phone number led them to put a small dent in a growing problem.
Rozansky said, "It's a little safer. Today we got a little drugs off the streets. It wasn't the normal way of doing it, but it worked out well."
Tracy Tarsey is held on a felony charge of possessing a controlled substance. Hank Salisbury is free on a misdemeanor charge, and the man who accidentally called Crime Stoppers is off the hook for now.
