Default EGR: Exhaust Gas Recirculator...anyone know WTF this is?

My brother's 98 EX-V6 Coupe had its check engine light go on and he noticed lots of pinging (it was very prounounced when accelerating slowly, i noticed it alot). Anyways, turns out it was this EGR, exhaust gas recirculator, and the part itself only cost like 16 bucks but with labor it came out to $200+

Anywayz, anyone know what the hell the EGR actually does? Thanks in advance, but I kinda doubt anyone WILL know.

According to the Haynes manual..."The EGR system reduces oxides of nitrogen by recirculating exhaust gas through the EGR valve and intake manifold into the combustion chambers." In the manual theres something about a valve, a solenoid and a vacuum. It sounds kinda complicated but $200 labor?.....hmmmm.

basically it passes some of the exhaust gases through parts of the engine in order to further break them down to more neutral compounds.

You sure that $200 didnt include the cost of computer diagnosing the problem?? If it didnt then the install price seems kinda high.

That explains why it was pinging, thanks guys. It included everything necessary to solve the problem, so yeah, probably diagnostics too. Thanks alot
