Default Transmission 1996 EX (wow)

I am inquiring for a friend. My friend has a 1996 Accord EX with an automatic transmission. This transmission went bad today..

This is one of the weirdest things I've ever experienced. The car will do fine in Reverse and 1st gear.

Here's how it goes.

D4/D3/2 - Goes through 1st gear and then throws itself into Neutral and just keeps revving.

1st gear - lets you just drive, but revvs like it's not supposed to be there. I got it up to 50 mph in the 1st gear position. I know that it switches itself into 2nd gear, but I don't understand this AT ALL.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

I know the transmission is ****ed, but anyone else experience this?

it's possible that it may not be the tranny.. it may just be the torque converter

theres no way u could reach 50mph in first gear in an AT...no way!!! It redlines for me at like 25mph..maybe. But 50?

thats NOT healthy for ur engine, u might remedy ur transmission that way but then ur engine will be blown. Rpms are too high when doin that.

I'd get it looked at by honda man, they know what their talkin about!

As a precaution, Honda makes programmed the transmission to switch after a certain RPM so you wouldn't blow your engine.

In the 1 position, it will go all the way up to 50 mph, because it has switched itself into 2nd gear - as a safety precaution.

Yes, i understand that...BUT...he said it NEVER switches into 2nd gear right? So if ur AT SHIFTER is on the "1". It will automatically switch to 2nd gear when the rpms get too high? I thought when ur in 1 it STAYS in first gear no matter what? Just asking, thanx!
