Swaps are illegal right?
If you are swapping a 6 cylinder for an 8... is that illegal?
And also for those who have JDM swaps, its illegal to drive but legal to own right? How you get around driving it?

For JDM swaps you need all USDM smog equipment.
For all swaps the motor must be the same year or newer than the car, and it must pass the sniffer test, as well as visual test in some states (like here in cali)

depends where you live. in cali and some other states that have real strict emissions in may be hard to get it legal. in states like NH that have no emissions, it's very easy, just use don't tell the inspection station about your motor. even in MA where they have emissions i know someone who passed with his jdm h22, but used a oem cat.
no they're not illegal unless you put an engine in that is older then the vehicle, also, it's fine to swap in a JDM engine unless you have emissions which I don't. Even then, I'm SURE you can find someone to pass it anyway

It's illegal to swap a V6 for V8 if you don't tell your insurance company. Let's say you have a V6 Mustang, you pay V6 insurnace prices. Now let's swap in a V8, but not tell the insurance company.
If you get in a wreck with the V8, they will most likely not cover your car because you did not tell them of the motor swap.

spankaveli you are correct !
I called my insurance today to do some fishing. they value the car based on the VIN number, but keep all of your reciepts and records. If there's a wreck, they'll usually work with you to do the right thing.
Insurane is WAY too competitve now to loose old time customers like me (had the same people for 8 years).
