Default 1998 Accord V6 Transmission oil change...

Hi guys, i did some seach on this subject and understand that I have to drain the tranny (3 quart approx) then you fill back with 3 quart of fresh oil. Then you have to ride the car for 5 minutes approx, then you drain 3 quarts again, and refill back with 3 quart of fresh oil again.... then repeat until 9 quarts of fresh oil has been changed.

Did call Honda dealer this morning for the price of a quart and they says that it would cost 9.50 per quart. I said to the clerk i was looking for 9 quarts.

He said to my why are you looking for 9 quarts ? You only need 3.
He said that they (at the dealer) change only 3 quarts with their customer goes for an oil change.... changing 9 quarts is way too much.

Who is right here ?

Well, I don't have an auto so I wouldn't know for sure, but I'd think the 9 quart method would be best for fully flushing the system where the 3 quart method is probably the maintenace type flush rather than a comprehensize system flush. If you can afford to fork out $90 for tranny fluid then go for the 9 quart method.

just drain and refill. No need to continously flush. Also, Flushing the tranny is a no no

If i just put 3 quarts.... that mean that 3 quarts of fresh oil will be mixed with 6 quarts of used oil (if i can call it that way)
How big of a difference 3 quarts added to 6 can make to the quality of the overall mix ? The colour of the existing oil is red and doesnt smell bad at all.

I must have put 60000Kms on the engine since the last tranny oil change. I did the 9 quarts change at that time.

Just need your opinion on this one....

thanks again.

He isn't describing a flush, he is describing 3 back-to-back drain-and-refills. It's not necessary if you change the fluid on a regular basis, but it won't hurt, and is the only way to actually change out all the fluid on a hondamatic.

Not sure if 3 is always totally necessary, I believe there have been some over the years where changing it twice was enough to be considered a full change or "flush" (but not the normal kind, which is bad for honda autos), but normally 3 back-to-back changes are only recommended if it's relatively high miles and hasn't been changed prior, as a last resort if the trans. is acting up, or if someone used regular Dexron fluid instead of Honda ATF.

If it was my car, and I could get the fluid for less (try partsgeek.com), I'd probably change it twice every 30k or so, since that particular trans isn't known for lasting a long time. Keeping the fluid as fresh as possible (especially since they don't have a replaceable filter) might help to prolong it's life.

was reading the tranny oil level on the dipstick, and to my surprise, with the engine hot and still running, the level is approx half of an inch above the full mark....

My tranny has allways been working proprely no problem what so ever, could the fact of having more oil than suggested could have contributed for the tranny to work proprely... just guessing here.

Since i am in the process of changing the oil (9 quarts) should i bring the level back to the full mark or leave it where it is now...

^I'd follow what the manual says, regardless of it's current level. Drain it, put in what you think is the correct amount based on what came out(or whatever manual calls for), and then check it after it's been driven to make sure it's at the right level.
