My cousin's accord tranny stopped responding... engine runs, but when giving it gas while in gear it acts like it's in neutral. It's been having harsh shifting prior to that... does this mean the tranny is dead?
how reliable if a rebuilt tranny? price range for repairs?

Sounds dead to me ... there's 2 sides to this story.

When mine died it was $1800-$2000 to have it rebuilt w/new converter. OR $1100 for a used Japan one ... and about 1wk less wait.

Got the Japan one ... runs fine, fluid is clean ... but the gearing is different ... its like putting in 4.10's in an american car.

 

Sounds like shes out of fluid or the torque converter failed. Check out the fluid and make sure the axles are ok, if one is blown out or somehow missing the car won't move but I'm sure you'd here the axle spinning.

 

Hondas and Acura use a different automatic transmission design and from what I've heard are more costly to repair (labor). My parents had the automatic that was in my car rebuilt by a reputable local shop and with parts and labor it was around $3,000. Yes, three thousand dollars. The fresh rebuild will of course give you a longer lasting and better performing trans but for that cost you could buy another car. E-bay or forums have them going for around $200-$350.
