Just so you're up on the latest smartphones that came out...
Samsung Ace - pretty much like a CDMA version of the Blackjack (not Blackjack 2) and an additional GSM radio and SIM card slot like the Blackberry 8830 to allow for international roaming.
HTC Touch - sorta kinda iPhone competitor, WM6 Pro, touch screen only, pretty dang small.
No clue on supposedly neat dumbphones, I don't really pay attention to those.

Funny story about SERO. A guy at my office had the same Sprint phone since like 2004. He didn't even have a text messaging plan because the phone could only view text messaging by logging on to some mobile web site. Old skool.
He was tempted to grab a smartphone by the other folks in the office who were snapping them up but didn't really want to step up to the minimum $65/month bill he'd be looking at. I pointed him to SERO and he ordered an HTC Touch.
After signing up for the SERO plan, he called Sprint to tell them to cancel his old plan because he signed up for SERO. After several tries, they told him it wouldn't be possible at that point "because the servers are down for maintenance."
He called back the next day, got put on hold, bounced around to a couple of the wrong departments, and finally to someone who told him that the previous day was the last possible day for him to have canceled his old plan without getting billed for another month of service. My friend pointed out that he called to cancel the previous day for that very reason but was told they couldn't cancel his service because of some server error. Some more waiting and supervisor approvals, and they ended up setting his account to turn off in a month, which he would be billed and then credited for.
Sprint's network is fine but they seem to be such a pain in the ass to deal with and that's why they're losing customers. Only reason my friend stuck around was because of the SERO plan and in spite of the horrible customer service.
I like my AT&T just fine, especially since I get to talk with Business customer support instead of falling into the standard support queue.
