Default turbo or transplant?

Just got a 97 honda civic ex coupe...I'm new to all this. I want to know where to start. I'm old school, how can I tell what type of engine I have...based on vin numbers? Is there a data base to dial into that can point me in the direction of determining the type of engine I have.

do you think a natural born aspirated engine is the way to go, turbo that, or go with the acura transplant? I'm for building primarly for daily driver dependability?

Welcome to HAN.
Your car has a D16y8. it is a sohc v-tec.
On that motor N/A will not yeild a lot of power.
You need to ask yourself how much power you want and go from there.
Is your car auto or manuel?
With auto its not worth doing much at all.
