Default Is money in a card an appropriate gift for a 4 y/o?

My niece is turning 4 today and I was wondering if I should get her something from Toys R' Us or just put 10 bucks in a card and call it a day. If not, then what age would that be a "cool uncle" thing to do?

Not really. My sister gives her an allowance and she lets her hold onto the money. Then whenever they go out somewhere and she sees something that she wants, my sis tells her "Well, how much do you have in your allowance money?" And she'll bust it out and count it.

At four it's iffy, it would be better to buy her something, IMHO.

Well, there was something on her wishlist that my sis put on there. Some "Reader Rabbit fun with phonics" CD that was like $15. The problem is, I went to Toys R' Us and Borders last night and they didn't have it at either place .
