Default 95 Honda Accord LX - Speedometer Problem

Hi Folks,
I need your help.

I have a 95 accord , 4cy, automatic transmission. My speedometer sometime works and sometime it doesn’t. There is no check engine light on the dash board. Occasionally, if I press the trip meter knob couple time it started working. Does anyone has any clue that this is the speedometer problem or VSS problem?

Appreciate your tips.

Shan.

Speed sensor. I had the same thing in my '96 LX, and I was able to have it replaced by the dealer at no cost. There must have been some sort of recall, because the car was otherwise way out of warranty (this happened in July of 2006)

Did you work at a dealer? If so how much is a reasonable price to get this fixed? Is is a reasonable DIY? I have been having the exact same problem for 3+ years, and a while ago a Honda dealer wanted $250 to change some gears behind the gauges.

When my speedo stops, it also stops logging miles...I've probably gone 10k more than my odometer says...

I work at an independent repair shop but hondas are our bread and butter $250 sounds about right for the going price as for DIY it's not too hard just pull the gauge cluster swap out the speedo , only thing is your car will only have 1 mile on it after you replace the speedo. like you said if you mess with the knob it works sometimes if it was a VSS it wouldn't make a diffrence plus your D4 will flash and CE will come on and report code 17 VSS , you can also get a used gauge cluster with mileage close to yours.

Thanks for the tips. I found a salvage place for 95 accord speedometer. he wants $50. Can someone provides some step-by-step instructions on DIY for repalcing the speedometer with the one from junk yard. It's got about 112K and mine shows 135K.

Thanks again for all your feedback.

Shan.

Thanks for the info, nobody ever gave me a direct answer. So you're saying if i took it into Honda, I'd get my car back with a milage of 1? Thats a lot less than 171k

Because your problem was not with your actual gauge cluster...you said it was the VSS.

all new speedo's have 1 mile on them out of the box from honda if you want to have it set to 171k then it would have to go to a specialest that can match the miles to your old unit.
